请教两道英文题，谢谢

如题：
1：This tournament has attracted many sailing (          ) from all over the world.
   1.  sailors    2.contestants 3.entrants    4.enthusiasts

给出的答案是4 ，我的理解是这场赛事吸引了来自世界各地的帆船爱好者。但不知为什么不可以是2，吸引了世界各地的选手。

2：The quatity of the goods here is better than that ot those ve saw yesterday.
1.exceeds    2.surpasses 3.rivals 4.improves
给出的答案是2 但是1.exceed  也是超过的意思，为什么不可以选呢？

我的看法：

1. 如果是中文，选“爱好者”或“选手”似乎都没问题，但在英文中就不同了。Contestant 的意思是“one that participates in a contest”, 这一点决定了contestant的定语只能是 “Contest”或“Award”的名称而不能是运动或活动本身的名称，如：“Olympic Contestants”“SMOPS Contestants”"MIss Universe 2011 Contestants"等等，“Enthusiast"则正相反。再请参考以下例句：

“With the perfect conditions of golden sandy shores and fresh breeze to magnify the yachting experience, the beaches in Sri Lanka can be seen as an ideal location for yachting enthusiasts. Contestants from ten countries including Australia, UK, South Africa, Belgium, America and Norway took part in this year’s GP -14 world sailing championship held in Sri Lanka.”

当然“Basketball Contestants”之类的词语也经常见诸媒体，但这是一种不太正规的用法。

2. Exceed多指数量，大小，时间，范围等方面的“超过”，这些东西是具体的可以被衡量的。而Surpass 多指质量，能力，优点等难以度量的方面的“超过”。另外还有一词“Excel”的使用方法也容易和前二者混淆，Excel 特指在成绩，表现，学业，知识等方面的“超越”。
